Windows 98 client won't connect to Samba shares

I have a Redhat 8.0 Server that I am having trouble setting up a connection to the homes share from two Windows 98 client. I have a Windows XP client that works connecting to the homes directory for the login. Each PC has a separate network login. Each user login is entered as a user on the Redhat Server. I have double checked the user passwords and smbpasswords for each user. When trying to map a drive from within windows explorer on the 98 PCs (the PCs have applications that prevent upgrading to a newer version of WIndows) after typing in the samba password for the user I get the message "no permission to connect to resource". All three PCs and the server have the same workgroup. In the smb.conf file there are no entries for hosts allow or deny (trying to keep network simple). I have setup network shares for "homes" on other networks with Windows 98 PCs the same way and had them work very easily. Any suggestions?

You mentioned that you double-checked the passwords, but what about the usernames ?

Windows98 uses the username and password provided at the logon window in order to connect to shares.
The win98 password has to be the same as the Samba and Linux password.
I suggest you create user names in lowercase only.
Also, I believe there is a patch for networking issues in Windows98, check the WindowsUpdate for any fixes.

There is a step by step configuration available in the OpenBook Using Samba, 2nd Edition.

Hope this helps.
