Linux and Windows XP! Need help ( post #1)

I have the problem that many people used to do. I'd like to use 2 OS in a computer (OS Linux Redhat 7.x and OS $WinXP)

I used winXP in my computer, then I installed Redhat 7.x. The result the system can't boot OS winXP. Instead Redhat always runs when the machine turn on. I changed BIOS to run winXP but nothing is effective.

In my case, I used C: to due WinXP and F: for Linux.
Does anyone here help me, I can't run winXP anymore. My winXp keep my data, I don't care to lose Linux to install again. ( i don't have my Windows XP bootdisk, I lost it somewhere)
I'm a newbie in Linux.


forgot to tell that after I installed Linux Redhat 7.x completely. I can't use my keyboard with some numberic and symbol keys on the left such as 1234..to 90 and !@#$@ to ()

P.S. Expect to get a post or two about multiple identical threads. A definite no-no.

Insert the CD of XP and then restart the machine .
Go into Bios and change the boot sequence so that your machine starts from the cdrom drive .
Boot from CDrom and when the menu appers press the right button the says fix an existing installation .After you do this login as Admyn.It will ask propably for a password but not neccesseraly.Then at the prompt do the following:
1.Type the command fixmpi.it will ask you something answer yes
2.Type the command fixboot.it will ask you something answer yes
after these type restart
insert into bios and change the boot sequence and make it to boot from the hard disk .This wiil fix the bootsector of your windows and you will be able to boot windows but not linux .For the linux try simply to update and the installation by adding some packages and when prompted to write loader at the disk say now then it will ask you to create a bootdisk DO that so you can boot from a diskete the linux partition .

Why do you choose this long and risk procedure.
Just Insert a Win98 Boot disk and boot from floppy when it is booted

type the command.

fdsik/mbr

then you will be able to boot from the Windows XP and your Linux willnot be destroyed.

Or alternatively, reinstall linux and add the boot manager to MBR, if you're using a lateish version of linux it'll add XP to the boot menu too !!!!

Sheesh, get a grip

the Win98 boot disk does not always do the trick with winXP! i ran into this problem a few times. the easiest way that i found was somewhat like what geminyn_1981. when you boot off of your WinXP disc you will get the option of instal, fix bla bla bla.
select install new. windows will detect you Installed Winxp and will ask you to fix it! select yes to fix it. this should bring you to a Command Prompt. get to you drive that you XP CD is in.

(or in short if you can get to a command prompt with CD-rom support get there!)

type in "fixMBR" and it should fix your MBR. (if it does not work browse the cd and find the file that relates to fixMBR)

once you re-start you will be able to boot into winblows only! you will have to re-install linux. when you reinstall linux and you are setting up your Bootloader (lilo or grub) MAKE SURE YOU PUT A LABEL ON YOUR WINBLOWS DRIVE!! by defualt i have noticed that linux install does not put a name on your winblows drive (partition) with out a name, when you bootloader loads up you will ONLY see your Linux partion!!
