Win98 & Suse 8.1 on Compaq Laptop

Hello Expertee,

I am trying to install Suse 8.1 on a Laptop with P-III, 650Mhz, 192Mb RAM & 11.9 gb hard disk where WIn98 has occupied 9.9gb and rest 2gb I am allocating for Linux base installtion. I cant go ahead with installation as it does n't select the base software required for installation. Any idea?Looking to your help.

Thanks in advance,

Regards.
Dev.

That isn't much room for an install. I'd suggest going with a smaller distro. Even a minimal SuSE install is going to be pretty cramped there.

Check in to Damn Small Linux or one of the other "smaller" style Linux distros.

As for your install, you should have a small swap partition and the rest partitioned as root.

Any way you can slim down the windoze install to make some more room for your Linux?

You could try to boot with the option 'hdc=ide-scsi' (simply type at the installation menu).
Or this: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2002/1...vdinstall.html

Hi Mason,

Thanks for your prompt response. However I do remember, it was a year back with same 2gb space. There are 3 partitions, /, swap & /root. I think swap is around 2xxmb , / is 1.8gb & i/root is around 15mb...any idea if i make changes in partitionif it will work? nice to share your experience.

What kind of install do you try to run? CD/DVD or perhaps FTP?

If it's FTP, the most probable reason is that SuSE can't connect to the specified FTP-server or the server is responding to slow.

I've had the same problem once. Switched to another FTP-server and all problems faded.

You can find a list of mirrors here.

Hope this helps. If not, perhaps you can specify more information about your method and setup.

Good luck.
