Question Win XPatriot: DVDShrink + VOB2MPG alternative?

Please allow me to-- first-- thank you for your continuing aid for all we new to the better operating system, Linux, and it's various incarnations. I am pleased to be a part of the community. Now, on with the question:

AT HAND:
a Digital Versatile Disk, formatted the only way i knew-- at the time-- for such media as /DVD/. Thus, it has the VIDEO_TS struct., and of course the .VOB's, etc. (e.g. as created via set-top DVD-R/RW component, Magnavox, pretty bad ass for all sorts of things, but i digress)
Aforementioned DVD contains AUDIO-ONLY (but, let us consider that bit, irrelevant, for the sake of education, mine).
A RARE John Lennon, so-called /lost tapes/, radio broadcast: Orig media: S-VHS > Audio to aforementioned set-top DVD-R/W component.

AT ISSUE / What this User does desire as outcome:
I suspect few, if any of us spin DVD's for audio entertainment, home-to-the-grocery-and-back, dig? Right. Of course you don't do that, because you probably don't drive a BMW SUV, like the rich-bitches live near me! (:ahem: did i say that? oh, and i digress... my apologies.)

ULTIMATE DESIRE, as explained through ANECDOTAL REPORT:
Had I the point-n-click-sick-suck-system w/ which i /used-to/ edit such media, i would have done the following:
  1. "DVD Shrink" that DVD, for ease of extracting the nonsensical structure of the VOB's, etc., in one fell swoop (e.g. win32 soft, pretty decent i must admit).
  2. Aforementioned DVD media (e.g. J.Lennon Rarities, Audio Only), via "DVD Shrink" (or any such extraction method [i.e. Smart Ripper; ISO Buster; but DVD Shrink badass for it'll do the double-layers down to 4.xGB DVD size, and again, i digress) :: The Lennon Audio would then reside on the Linux /Mint Maya/ HDD (local Hard Disk Drive {temp of course, cause i won't need it, soon as i get to next step}...)
  3. Using a freeware win32 app, VOB2MPEG (sp? who cares!!), i point to that DVD extraction, let V2M find the .IFO files (again, badass feature of the latest version, VS former, clunky method of scanning the VOB files themselves).
  4. By now, I would be /nearly/ finished, and ready to burn CDDA media. I realize, MPG is not Mp3 (or other such -to-> CDDA compressed audio). But, I am familiar w/ /Transmageddon/, however wish i didn't have to do each media bit, one at a time {e.g. is there a batch mode for multi-transcoding w/ Transmageddon? if no, have you a suggestion?}
  5. Having now my CDDA-friendly /audio-only/ media, i can burn that sucker like a Lucky Strike, and enjoy it even more!

:sigh: I realize there's a lot to digest here. However, my brother [userid here, ajaxStardust, i believe] tells me this is the forum where the help is helpful, and the community is communal, and rarely do the know-it-all's descend upon such as i, ready for devouring my initiative to learn, etc.

So, that's that! I am very eager to hear what is your opinion on the matter.

I know how to add the PPA's. Tried Handbrake, but must be missing a dependency. Not sure what's up w/ that. Others, just too /spartan/ for my limited knowledge (e.g. Not an expert? Fire up the MS-box, and wait, and wait, and hate, and hate), so I come to you for salvation.

Thank you, sincerely, for your time, and consideration of this query. I do apologize for the lengthy text, but i couldn't think of another way to best explain my intentions. I trust more than one of you will have a viable suggestion. Learning is fun. I'm no Linux expert, but my brother can probably translate for me, if i can't get it on my own.

Best regards!

Hi there,

that was a long story, but let me try to summarize:

You've got a DVD with some rare music recording, and you'd like to convert this into a standards compliant CDDA.
Is that right so far?

Here's how I would do it:
  • Open the first VOB file of the VOB chain (usually VTS_01_1.VOB) in Avidemux. Avidemux will ask you whether it should continue with the next VOB in the chain; say yes, of course.
  • Don't bother about video settings, as you only want audio. In the drop down field labeled "Audio" on the left side, select "PCM".
  • Click the "Filter" button below that. A dialog window pops up where you check the option "Resampling" and set the sampling rate to 44100, which is standard for CDDA.
  • You may wish to adjust the audio gain to get maximum dynamic range, but probably your original recording has leveled that out nicely. Click OF to confirm the filter settings.
  • From the main menu, select Audio/Save, and enter a file name to save to (preferrably with a .wav extension).

That's it. Now you should have an audio file which is perfectly suited for creating a CDDA with your favorite CD burning application.

Question one more question

I figure I don't want to do this with via optical media (e.g. from the DVD in the DVD drive), though perhaps that /would/ work.

I'd like to extract those VOB's (e.g. ah-la DVD Shrink; Smart Rip, etc.), but i'm unfamiliar w/ software of that nature for the Linux (Mint 13) platform.

What is the recommended method for mirroring the DVD structure to my HDD, that the CPU etc. might more easily process this data?

Thanks!

P.S. if you have a CLI script i might copy/ paste, i'd be very appreciative! E.g.
Code:
$ apt-get install -f --install-recommends --install-suggests appname_01 appname_02
Thank you for your thoughtful attention to my query!
