Will not shutdown or restart properly

okay, I'm sure there's an underlying hardware problem for this... but I figured I'd start here as I do not know the specific hardware issue.

I'm in Ubuntu 9.10 (Ubuntu Studio actually) and my computer will not shut down properly. I get the splash, then a black screen, then something like #terminating processes
#closing connections
#blah blah blah
#will now halt(or will now restart if rebooting)

not quite sure where to start... but if you tell me what to do I'd be glad to post!

thankie

Do the computer actually shut down? (or reboot) Or just stays there with the last message?
I am not familiar with the shut down process of Ubuntu, but from what I can see there, seems everything's fine

hudsonryde 03-25-2010 08:12 PM

nope it just hangs there with that last message disks spinning and all until I reach over and hold down the power button. I wouldn't mind it so much if it was just on the shut down process, but when rebooting I still have to reach over and and power down. then wait for the disk to stop spinning and power back up

Sounds like an acpi problem. Is acpi installed? What is the motherboard?

Does acpi work with other operating systems? Eg different linux versions or even proprietary OSs?

yes, i had suspected acpi, so i looked up how to fix what's up, and none of the stuff i tried worked, there's a good chance i did it wrong though, so let's run it down from the start:

how do i tell if acpi is installed? and how do i tell what my motherboard is?

and to answer your final question, i have windows 7 on my computer as well with no issues, and previously had Ubuntu 9.10, then recently reformatted that partition and installed Ubuntu Studio 9.10, then got the error

From the documentation that came with your machine or perhaps by using dmidecode.

After finding out the MB you should be able to google to see if anyone has the same problems with that hardware.

Ok, so at least the hardware should be working.

hudsonryde 03-28-2010 02:17 PM

anyone?

rubentje1991 03-28-2010 03:01 PM

shutdown

does dmidecode give some output (what's your motherboard - it's really needed!)
=> did you try to google your motherboard?

waiting...

hudsonryde 03-28-2010 03:34 PM

yea, dmidecode says it's an AMI motherboard and I did google it, but didn't find anything related to my issue. the closest thing I could find was this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...338/comments/0

but that doesn't really describe the problem I'm having
