Haha ladies and gentlemen I think I have found a work around, you see when you download Ubuntu and burn to a disc before installing it lets you try it out as a live cd(which work on my comp). Then from inside the live cd with GUI and all it lets you install to the disc. There is now no way I can loose. I will be posting back to you on progress.

P.S Maybe I should have used the Gpedit CD to edit them before installing from boot, but then what diffrence whould that make? it would still get so close to the install and then reboot?

again open to any suggestion, remeber not all linux distros let you try it out then install it from the live cd so I still need a way.

Suggestions based on my experience:

-check for firmware updates for your CD-ROM/CD-R and if there are applicable changes made-- go ahead and upgrade the device(s)

-check to make sure the blank media you are using to burn these ISO images is compatible with your drive(s). Do a google on your CD drive using the model number and you should find this info relatively easy. Use high-quality media

-burn at sub-maximal speeds

-verify the iso checksums before burning

-check your bios version and if an upgrade exists that has corrected any problems you find applicable to your situation, flash it

-make sure you have partitionable space on your HD(s) before attempting to install.

-make sure you're using the correct distro type for your architecture-- if you have a 32-bit cpu you must use the 386 version of the distribution(s) you want to run, for example.

-scan for viruses

-run a diagnostic utility (or multiple ones if necessary) to check your memory and other hardware.

I had a problem on Compaq hardware with Mandrake/Mandriva in the past. I had to perform the installation with the "NOACPI" and "NOPROBE" options. After the load, things worked just fine.

You might also want to try another distro, such as Unbutu or Knoppix, which can be brought up on a single CD. I've recently had alot of luck with Opensuse, which provides alot of the desktop goodies that Mandriva does.

slyfer55:

You say you can boot and run the "live" Linux CDs? Have you tried booting Ubuntu 6.06 "live"? After you boot Ubuntu 6.06, the installation routine is executed from the "live" Ubuntu installation in RAM, not from an installation program on a boot CD. It would be interesting to see if this worked, or if your machine rebooted when an already-running "live" Ubuntu OS tried to repartition the hard disk.

My guess is that if your computer will boot and run Ubuntu 6.06 "live" it will also install Ubuntu 6.06. Even if Ubuntu is not the Linux you prefer, you may be able to install other (previously uninstallable) versions of Linux on your machine by overwriting the Ubuntu installation, once the Linux partitions and boot-loader have been placed on the hard drive by Ubuntu.

Also, if you have an old hard drive from a previous computer or if you can afford to buy a blank new drive, it would be interesting to see what would happen if you swapped out your existing Compaq C: drive for an old or unformatted drive. If your Compaq would not allow formatting and installation of Linux to an old or unformatted disk, you've definitely got some BIOS configuration problem or hardware malfunction on your Compaq. (By the way, a new drive wouldn't necessarily go to waste after you were done experimenting. You could then install it as a second hard drive, and place your Linux installation to the second drive. Windows must always be located on the "boot" drive, but Linux can boot from alternative drives in dual-boot configurations.)

----------------------------------------------------------------

Oops, Sorry! I just saw your post about your Ubuntu failure. What happened to Ubuntu? Did your Compaq reboot, or did the installation just crash?

Yah

I actually tried to download the Ubuntu Live/Install CD and it wont boot even though it is technically a live CD. No it actually just reboot, like it would if it were an actual cd. I get to the first screen and everything and I see the logo there and I hit enter, and BOOM my computer reboots.

Also I have two old hard drives(6 GB each) laying around, if I were to say put em in, then what diffrence would that really make?

h t t p://10025 DOT www1 DOT hp DOT com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&tool=softwareCategory&product=407666&os=228

Go to hp dot com and under the drivers and downloads section click on desktops and search for your system by model number. I had the exact link but can't post it until I have a certain amount of posts here on the forum but its easy to find with a few minutes time.in There are links to all the files you need to do the work. Or just replace DOT with a period in the first line of this post to go straight to the section I'm talking about.

I'd suggest you first read all instructions on how to flash your bios and firmware, then download the the files you need, then re-read the instructions and proceed with caution. Make sure your mobo and cd drive are compatible with the updates before you do this-- don't rush through things b/c an unsuccessful flash of your bios or cd-r can render it useless/destroy it. Also be sure to download the guides to your system that are on that site and read them to see if your problem is a possible known issue and search the FAQs/contact customer support and ask for help w/ this problem.

One final piece of advice-- make sure you use a good ISO recording program to write the distros to CDs. And I can't stress enough how important it is to use the proper media for your CD writer -- certain drives read/write certain brands/types of media great while other types of media may be utterly useless on the drives. Find the right CD media for your drive and use UltraIso or Nero or something like that to burn the images. Roxio, IME, is terrible for iso burning. The free progs like CD burnerxp are very hit and miss from my history w/ them.

Just read that you can't use the Ubuntu Live Desktop cd. If it is the LTS dapper drake version that is compatible w/ your system's architecture (which I assume would be the x86 version) then I don't konw what to suggest aside from upgrading to a computer that is not a compaq/hp/dell/emachine and has a decent processor (ie 64 bit 2ghz+ amd or intel D/HT/Core Duo) + at least 1gb of ram w/ a good, big sata drive.

Don't give up yet-- Linux is great and once you switch from windows you'll really be glad you did.

Good luck and HTH

Thanks for the Linux is great message, beleive me I love it thats why its so sad that I cant get it to work. Okay I actually already did upgrade the BIOS and Firmware succesfully unfortunatley that has not helped at all. And the only thing im getting under software/driver downloads is the HP mouse and keyboard thing. And Im no linux guru but could that possibly be the problem? Im starting to think that maybe if I install an internal harddrive (6GB) then set it to be the boot device and then try and do the cd thing that it will work and if it doesent then we know its not because of the harddrive and its not because of the cds but because of the computer.

HP/Compaq Ubuntu

Keep in mind that I too am a newbie. However, I have loaded ubuntu breezy on 6 machines. Minus the initial issues, there was little problem unless I updated or upgraded to dapper. Even with that the major problem I faced involved the ATI radeon drivers as mentioned elsewhere on this and other forums.

Check RAM: is it more than 128mb? Check harddrive space: more than 6gb (someone with more experience may correct me on this one). One other issue is kinda stupid, but was an issue in another forum: is the little coin battery fresh or original?

All of that to say that breezy was very easy to install (pardon the pun there). MIght wish to go back to breezy and go from there, rather than the dapper.

TBOne probably has the right idea - the boot/install disk is probing hardware that's not liking it. Have you tried the suggestions he/she/it provided?

I actually have a 80 GB hard drive and 512 MB of Ram. So that shouldnt be the problem, I have tried all the options they provide.

The page I found for the presario system had over a dozen downloads but maybe it was the incorrect one for your computer model, so let's try something else.

Check for hardware compatability issues like another poster suggested (Not sure but the Linux HCL link on the right side of this page I think has that info)

I know from experience it can be a PITA when using a computer with proprietary components like a Dell (E510 model is what I'm using now) or HP, compaq--etc. But you can use a free program like System Information for Windows (SIW) or Sandra Lite 2007 and find most/all the exact details and info you need on your system's hardware.

Another possibility is to try using DSL or a similar distro and install/run it from a usb pin/flash drive (dunno if the external hd works for this). As long as your bios supports booting from USB devices this is a great way to run Linux, IMO. Much faster than a CD/Live distribution--and, if the problems you're having are related to something w/ your cd drives then you'd be golden.

And the external HD install option shouldn't hurt to try, AFAIK.

Just throwing out some ideas here and trying to help-- I am not a linux guru by far (only have a couple months of experience with the beast) so I might be making stupid suggestions, but honestly I'm just trying to help and be positive.

Final thought- maybe getting one of the linux books that contain one or more distributions on cd/dvd would be a good idea if you keep having problems. I saw a fairly large stock at my local bookstore with all the major Linux flavors (Suse, Fedora, Ubuntu, etc) included with everything from $6 magazines to 600+page books that cost 40 bucks.

EDIT: If you haven't tried the latest Knoppix Live CD then you should. I was about to give up on linux (debian sarge, FC4, and slackware 10.2 all failed to work on my cpu) until I got a copy of knoppix live and after that it has been great. I think Knoppix has less compatibility issues than Ubuntu or mandrake/mandriva. Opensuse Live 10.1 also worked like a charm from the get-go. Anyway.

Good luck.
