Wierd happenings after Kernel Compile on Fedora
 

Ok, so I made my second attempt at ever compiling my own kernel. Everything seemed to go well this time, no compile errors, anything, so i did make install and rebooted.

The first wierd thing that happens is when I boot the kernel from grub, i get a "radeonfb Invalid ROM signature at 0 should be 0xaa55". Also, the screen seems shifted to the left by almost an inch, I had to move the screen with the monitor controls to see the entire error message. I did a google and found some results, but most seemed to be for laptops and debian for some reason. I can still boot fine and when the x server starts it is in the correct placement.

Also, after the new kernel, it seems that GNOME loads, but it takes a long time for the top and bottom panels to appear. I thought this might be something I did wrong when configuring the kernel, but it also does it now when I boot into either of the older kernels I still have in grub. Once they load, however, everything seems to go at normal pace (actually a slight bit faster in the custom kernel) and if I log out and back in without a restart, the panels load very rapidly, as they used to before I compiled the new kernel.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? There is nothing major, I can still use everything, but it is still a bit annoying and I want to learn what I may have done wrong so I can avoid the mistake in the future.

with what options did u build ur kernel??

it is better to load a predefined config file, which u have of your present kernel in the /boot sirectory
then choose ur motherboard drivers
and follow the build procedure to get urself a kenel

I followed the guide in the fedora forum. I did make xconfig and took out things i didn't need, and compiled some things in the kernel as opposed to modules. Things I took out were things i thought sure i wouldn't need, like ISA support and support for other soundcards and videocards etc.

I guess i could just compile another kernel and use everything default, but would that make it faster? I'm still not sure on how to get it to compile specifically for my processor, Athlon 1800+ (i686, yes?)

And, I don't see how that could have affected GNOME load time, even on the old kernels that came with fedora.

there is a processor type option
where u can select ur processor.

and
load a config file of ur running kernel and then remove those optoins that u do not require
