widevinecdm, WidevineCdm, or WidevineCDM?
 

Google Chrome is broken and does not list widevine under components. This means widevine cannot be updated. This means amazon videos do not play in HD in the browser.

This is with all available versions of the browser and 2 separate computers. As far as I can tell Linux is not supported by Amazon any more. I won't be watching television ever again unless I can watch in HD. I have been playing HD videos from Amazon since 2011.

In an effort to manually install widevine I must copy widevine files into a folder in the Chrome profile. Unfortunately I do not know the spelling or directory structure.

Is the folder entitled widevinecdm, WidevineCdm, WidevineCDM, or other?
What is the folder inside of that folder entitled?
What files are inside that folder?

I figured this out.

First of all, on Chrome on Linux widevinecdm may not show under components - this is a red herring. Chrome still works because the widevine library file is in the /opt/google-chrome folder as installed by default.

Second, Firefox 64 Quantum and Google Chrome will stream from Amazon - but not Chromium on my system possibly because it needs to be updated and I can't easily do that. I downloaded the Firefox tar.bz2 file from Mozilla and it worked straight away after extraction. The magic of static binaries. You have to click the "Play DRM Content" button in Firefox settings for it to download widevine components.

Third, now in order to stream in HD the Firefox user agent needs to be changed to Windows. It worked with a Linux user agent until about a week ago. They have made it more difficult to change the Chrome user agent so for now I will use Firefox.

Fourth, the latest versions of Firefox are Poetteringware and require Pulseaudio. Best to just use a Chrome extension to change the user agent or the developer tools on a tab by tab basis. Or you can compile your own version of Firefox with Alsa support included.
