Why wont tar command work on Fedora core 2

I downloaded the modem software speedtouchconf-19-06-2004.tar.gz using a WindowsXP connection. Then copied the file to a cd, then I was able to copy the software file into the home directory of my Fedora core 1 and was able to unzip it using the tar xzvf command, and then run the script to set up an internet connection.

But when I try to use exatly the same technique on Fedora Core 2, I get the response
gzip: unrecognized format. I copy the same speedtouch file to the core 1 and the tar command works, when I copy it to core 2 i get the unrecognized fomat response?

Try using tar zxvf <package>.tar.gz.If this does not help, try reinstalling the tar package from http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/tar/tar-1.14.tar.gz
