Why there so many partition number?

Hi all,
I would like to ask:

when i insert a CF PCMCIA daughter to my linux notebook,
here is the dmesg message:

hde: SanDisk SDCFH-128, CFA DISK drive
ide2 at 0x100-0x107,0x10e on irq 3
ide-floppy driver 0.99.newide
hde: task_no_data_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hde: task_no_data_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
hde: 250880 sectors (128 MB) w/1KiB Cache, CHS=980/8/32
hde: hde1
ide_cs: hde: Vcc = 3.3, Vpp = 0.0

usually we mount the CF card like this
#mount /dev/hde1 /mnt

What i would to ask is that where there so many partition like hde2.hde3....
as follow, What do they use for?

hde hde11 hde14 hde17 hde2 hde22 hde25 hde28 hde30 hde4 hde7
hde1 hde12 hde15 hde18 hde20 hde23 hde26 hde29 hde31 hde5 hde8
hde10 hde13 hde16 hde19 hde21 hde24 hde27 hde3 hde32 hde6 hde9

Thanks
Alice

Well at the moment they wouldnt be doing anything MAKEDEV automatically creates those files. I would assume the reason is so you dont have to create them when you add new hardware
