Why SMTP?

Hello...
Well, i have an old mail account which i'm still using from an old ISP (which i have leaved).
I can configure my Mozilla mail client to retrieve mail from the pop server, but i cant send with the smtp server (maybe it's only for this ISP subscribers).

The thing i was wondering is : the shell command mail can send a mail without any SMTP server (maybe it's the smtp server itself). So why mail clients such as Mozilla's one or Outlook need an SMTP server?
Can i configure my Mozilla mail client to use the mail command for sending mails?
Else.. can i install an SMTP server on my machine and use it in my mail client?
Which one?

Thanx!

You can't set up mozilla to do direct delivery but you could set up an smtp server on your own machine. The only downside is that in some cases your mail may be automatically regarded as spam due to the IP namespace it vame from. I'd be very surprised if your new ISP doesn't have an smtp server that you could relay through though.

Oh i see.. thanx

Well, of course i can use the mail given by my actual ISP, but i dont want to depend on my ISP. If I leave this ISP, this mail may be deleted one day. Providing a mail is another way to affiliate us.
I think i have enough mail accounts over the world to open another.
