why my firefox doesn't work properly since firefox-13 ?
Hi, guys!
I got this issue for a long-long time, it bothers me a lot! I run Salis OS(14.01) that based on slackware, in which the default firefox is 17.0.8. Machine is a Dell INSPIRON M5110. Ever since Firefox-13,including the latest firefox-23.01 can't work properly, they can work properly at the begining, but after running for a while, firefox' bookmarks, tool, help, history...etc, the dropdown menu cannot work, and so does the context menu, you click , the menu shows up like a very fraction of a second then gone. I almost tried all versions, but got no luck if I run any version newer than firefox-12. since firefox-10 is the esr version, right now I run firefox-10.0.12 , but there are many web site don't support firefox-10 very well. I tried remove the whole '.mozilla' DIR and restart the thoese newer versions, but problem remains. It gets me really frustrated. I'm not expertise in the coding. Here is my last the hope for the solution. I tried Opera, after while I returned to firefox, guess I get too accustomed to it. There is a another thing maybe worth to mention which is the tor-bunddle that I tried, the firefox included in is firefox-17.0.8 , old version i tried too , which can work properly all the time. by properly I mean the drop-down menu and context menu. I tried to use it as a default one. but it's designed for all traffic is required to out and in through a proxy which can slow down the speed of accessing thoese normal sites. Is this part can be changed if I want to use this firefox as a normal one? Anyway, I'll be waiting for any advice. Please help! Thank you in advance! |
One way of finding out what's wrong with FF17 on your system is to run it from a terminal. When something goes wrong check the terminal and see if there's an error message that can help diagnose the problem.

17.0.8 is the current LONG LIFE version
how are you installing the different version of firefox 23 i take it you have 17 LTS and 23 installed at the same time i am willing to bet it is a plugin issue the location for 21 and up changed to FirefoxInstallFolder/browser/plugins from FirefoxInstallFolder/plugins Quote:
17.0.8 is the CURRENT long term support 17.0.7 was the version that had the javascript bug that REVEALED WHO YOU ARE and is fixed in 17.0.8 Quote:
what java are you using ? Orcales java 1.7 ? Orcales java 1.6 -- a now unsupported version ? OpenJDK 1.6 or 1.7 1.7 uses a sandbox and 1.6 uses the java.so as a plugin |
Thank you for your reply.
@jdkaye, I tried a couple of time, but I'm not good at coding. poor me! maybe i'll try to post some here. @John VV, Quote:
so, I guess I do have two version in my system, sometimes even more than two at the same time. Is that might be the problem? Quote:

java version "1.7.0_40" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea 2.4.0) (Slackware) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.0-b40, mixed mode) About plugins, I suspect on that just as much , i removed them as much as I can , the left ones I tested them by enable/disable, seems irrelevant. For this issue, honestly, I feel exhausted! My faith is in you, man! ^^ |
lets see if seamonkey has an issue
for that a 100% manual install is needed ( the exact same as firefox ) if this works you can uninstall every firefox and use the mozilla firefox23 tarball -- the 64 bit --- https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla..../linux-x86_64/ i run seamonkey 2.20 and firefox 23 and tor-bundle with FF 17.0.8 i use each browser for different things and add in chromium for "angry birds" there are a few ways to handle plugins on a 64 bit OS 32 bit browser and 32 bit plugins -- not what i want 64 bit browser with 32 bit plugins with a wrapper --- even worse 64 bit browser with 64 bit plugins --- yes Warning: if you have links in the /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins POINTING to the 32 bit /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins-wrapped folder you have 32 bit plugins installed if Seamonkey runs without a problem then firefox 23 should 64 bit English language "seamonkey-2.20.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2" https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla....s/2.20/contrib https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla....x86_64.tar.bz2 extract the seamonkey folder from the tarball copy it to ( you used /opt above so...) /opt/seamonkey add that location to your .profile file ( to your system $PATH ) now this is the 64 bit build it needs the plugins in /usr/lib64/browser-plugins launch seamonkey and type into the address bar Code:
about:plugins use your packagemanager and make sure that the 64 bit java , from above it is installed the 64 bit flash http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ should auto detect your 64 bit install " 11.2.202.297" is the very last one fallow the instructions in the file video and music plugins ?? there are so many , make sure they are the 64 bit ones you are using i use the mplayerplug-in " gecko-mediaplayer.so " and the extra add ons "gecko-mediaplayer-?? .so there are a few , a bit of a long list " if /opt is NOT a different partition than / ( some people do this ) link all the plugins in /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins to the folder in the seamonkey folder firefox changed this NOT seamonkey Code:
su - the file in /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/ is likely ALREADY A LINK fallow it through the one or two MORE links to get to the real file then link that one to "/opt/seamonkey/plugins/" flash and java have gotten in to a real royal mess make sure the links work and that they are NOT zero bits in size launch seamonkey and rerun Code:
about:plugins you should see them then see if the menus have the same problem then we can go from there for Firefox |
@John VV, Thanks again! I truelly appreciate your advice!
I've been searching the cure for this like a century. Never occur to me that search in chinese before, and I tried last time and found I'm not the only one that it seems a bug invovled with XIM, that means this bug only occur to CJK envirenment. Other info also said so it's a bug deep in firefox. quote,"That makes this hard to fix in Gecko.” here is link they coded a patch for this bug, https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39367, in the forum, there is other links, but they are all in chinese. I'll try this see what happens. |
