Don't get me wrong, the last thing I'm doing here is coming down on linux. Quite simply, I just expect it to work and do what I tell it to. However, Linux has a mind of it's own...

I have a Mandrake 9.2 server running as a file/web server. My other 6 computers are all running windows and I've never had a problem with them. I was incorporating a TeamSpeak server and checking my start up script to make sure that if for some reason power went out long enough for my UPS to fail, my computer illiterate girlfriend could push the buttons and boot it up and it would work (I'll be going to Iraq, and plan on talking to her by this means). Well, I was forced to improperly shut down due to my system GUI locking up and upon reboot, Samba refuses to dish out files. Mind you, this is my ENTIRE ARCHIVE OF FILES. Do I have a back up? No, I don't have a means to backup 65GB. Are the files lost? No, I realize this. However, upon checking and rechecking my settings for Samba EVERYTHING looks right. I can't get to my files, thank you linux. Just give me what I've asked for, when I've asked for it. Anyway, why can't someone post a nice little how-to to get a linux system running without telling me to recompile my OS 20 times, and telling me to install kuidzu without posting a link to that how-to so now I'm lost wondering WhatTF and WhereTF this program can be installed from. Wouldn't it be nice if someone actually dated their How-to or put version numbers on it that wheren't encrypted in some way that only a linux programmer can understand how if it's the current version. Simplicity is the word. I've vowed to write said how-to on the day I finally figure it all out. I've only been playing with linux for almost a year now, but it's driving up a wall how a simple reboot can bring the entire process to it's knees. Gee, if I want a program to start in Win, I just drag a shorcut to the start-up menu. Linux ... I have to script it ... some how ... some way ... specially designed for the program you are trying to start up on start-up. Which of course requires 12+ hours of research through the 20 different how-to's compilations that the search engines brought up. And PLEASE, don't get me started on virtual servers ...

Basically, where can I start the process of getting Samba 2.28 for Mandrake 9.2 working? I've restarted safely since that bad restart, forced shut smb stop ... start ... checked my settings, over and over ... deleted the samba shares and recreated. Checked permissions. Once again, everything worked beautifully until I rebooted.

Are either computers seeing each other? You might stop smb on both computers, then start it back up on both. Also, have you tried typing in the specific IP to the file server? That _might_ work. No promises.

Network connections are fine. I restarted TeamSpeak manually and can connect. Can SSH into Linux machine and can view my web pages. The ONLY thing being stubborn is Samba.

ALL of my other computers are windows. I'm trying to access the files from a windows machine. I've already stopped and restarted smb on the linux box.

Ok .. I withdraw my query. Once again, linux has prevailed!

Apparently, window's cache needed to be cleared.

So all is honkey-dorey again? :-)

Get's frusterating, and my Virtual Servers still aren't working right. But I'll save that for another post. Just needed to vent 4 hours of frustrations, and re-think things through.
