The 'SystemGroup' used to be defined in cupsd.conf, but in later CUPs versions it is now defined in cups-files.conf instead. Some distros do have 'lp' or 'lpadmin' groups configured as CUPS administrators (as well as root). IIRC, CentOS has 'sys' and root' configured, so the user could be a member of group 'sys' to get the necessary admin privileges.

For reference (openSUSE Leap), I have
Code:
# cat cups-files.conf|grep Sys
SystemGroup root

Thought I had maybe fixed it but did it again. Tried to print something online and just get an error page.

Can't seem to find any options in the cups web page that pertains to drivers, I used root for the password. This is the log file:

Code:
E [07/May/2017:07:36:02 -0400] Missing value on line 11 of /var/cache/cups/job.cache.
E [07/May/2017:08:04:21 -0400] Missing value on line 11 of /var/cache/cups/job.cache.
E [07/May/2017:09:02:41 -0400] Missing value on line 11 of /var/cache/cups/job.cache.
E [07/May/2017:10:01:01 -0400] Missing value on line 11 of /var/cache/cups/job.cache.
E [07/May/2017:10:59:21 -0400] Missing value on line 11 of /var/cache/cups/job.cache.
E [07/May/2017:11:11:50 -0400] Missing value on line 11 of /var/cache/cups/job.cache.
E [07/May/2017:11:11:55 -0400] [cups-deviced] PID 25946 (gutenprint52+usb) stopped with status 1!
E [07/May/2017:11:57:41 -0400] Missing value on line 11 of /var/cache/cups/job.cache.
Not much to go on, and none of those errors correspond with print jobs.

Also, printing takes bloody ages now. Like 2-3 minutes before it finally starts to print. It's almost like it's emulating a 300 baud serial link or something, but I think even that would be faster. :P

I did find the utility in Mint but nothing pertaining to drivers, so not sure if it's using the driver I installed or not. The test page works. The issue seems to only happen when printing from the internet, but oddball also from other sources. The slow issue seems to be everywhere. The test page took about 5 minutes before it started printing. The printer said "receiving data" and just sat there. Oddly it seems the ones that take very long are the ones that work. If it starts printing right away (as it would in Windows) then it's usually an error page.

I guess my next step is to try to configure the printer as a network printer and setup a separate print server VM, and see if by doing that it somehow makes the issue go away in the process.

As mentioned already the make and model selection determine the driver used,(or the ppd needs to be chosen specifically).

Anyway, you can check these details by examination of the installed PPD(s) using something like
Code:
egrep "Name|Model|Filter" /etc/cups/ppd/*.ppd

This search error seems to be commonly reported
Code:
[cups-deviced] PID 25946 (gutenprint52+usb) stopped with status 1!
and associated with a gutenprint bug...
