What have you got running ?

Could be almost anything eg a social media thing looking for updates, OS looking for pkg updates, ntpd etc....
We need more info.

Yes it could be almost anything.

Use another computer and run a network sniffing application to trace the packets.

Shut the computer off and it will not transfer 0.5 kbps for about 2 seconds, however often it happens to do that. Other options are to pull a physical network cable or disable the wireless adapter. It all depends how adamant you wish to be with following up on this.
