Why does xorg in Crux try to add all the consoles as X input devices?

This only happens in Crux, not in Debian or LFS. It goes through all the tty and stty devices, tries to add them and then drops them. A typical entry looks like:
Code:
[ 27.526] (II) config/udev: Adding input device (unnamed) (/dev/tty8)
[ 27.526] (II) No input driver specified, ignoring this device.
[ 27.526] (II) This device may have been added with another device file.
I checked the udev rules for tty devices but couldn't find any reference to their possible use by xorg.

It doesn't do any harm but it irritates me.

Do you have a xorg configuration file that contains something with libinput?

No, just a keyboard file to set a British keymap. As far as I can see, libinput is not installed.

If X is launched from inittab, maybe there is something wrong in there...

No, it's launched using startx. I'm not a great fan of display managers.

Maybe you can explicitly tell xorg to ignore these devices, creating a configuration file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

example, file "05-ignoretty.conf"
Code:
Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Ignore tty adds"
    MatchDevicePath "/dev/tty*|/dev/stty*"
    Driver "evdev"
    Option "Ignore" "true"
EndSection

That's a good idea and I'll try it next time I boot Crux. But I'd still like to know what is causing the problem in the first place.

No, it still picks them up. I just get a slightly different error message.
Previously: No input driver specified, ignoring this device
Now: (**) (unnamed): Ignoring device from InputClass "Ignore tty adds"

Oh, and you have to take the sttys out of the config file. If they aren't recognised, the xterms don't work.
