Why does VGA=xxx kernel parameter gets reset right away?

I've set up my kernel for framebuffer console support and for VGA=xxx kernel parameter. I've used VGA=ask and tried to use a few of the offered resolutions. But the system console gets reset to the default resolution (80colsx25rows?) just a few seconds later during the boot. How do I make it stay in the resolution I've selected? Also the text on the system console is to far to the right, so I need a way to move it a bit left. Thanks in advance.

vga=xxx is for the vesa driver only. You have to choose the option depending on your framebuffer-driver eg: video=aty128fb:1024x768

Check out Documentation/fb/ within your linux sources.
