Why does the hard disc space get full till the very end?

Hi
I use Fedora 3 and sometimes grab some videos from my satellite receiver, I don't have too much space so after some time my hard disc becomes full, so full, that there's no space to write some information for the operating system
My question is, how do I make Linux save some disc space before it gets full, say I want to always have 20 mb of free space and force the grabber to stop at that point.

Thanks.

Because this is how you/your distro set it up?

Depends on the file-system you chose, and/or whether you have quotas
installed or not.

As Tinkster said, you probablly need to set up a quota so that some space is in effect reserved.

Try man quota & man setquota for more info.

Depleting all space is no problem if you save the transmissions to a separate partition.

I usually have a /data partition for my data and downloads: that way my system remains usable even if I download too much.
