Why does pavucontrol not see my analog stereo output?

When I run pavucontrol, the only audio output it recognizes is HDMI, which I don't use. It recognizes the analog stereo input, responds when I talk. I use the analog output for every other purpose. Alas, Firefox uses nothing but pulse and I have to use a browser for sound sometimes.

Have you checked the profile via pavucontrol (config tab)?

Please show us the output from
Code:
pacmd list-sinks | egrep “active|output”

Hmmmm... I just ran pavucontrol to respond to your question and 'analog stereo output' now exists. I just finished taking a driver safety course (to get a discount on my auto insurance) using the captions for the deaf/H-O-H trying, during the breaks, everything I could think of to get the audio output to work (It's a boring course; listening makes it easier for me to pay attention.) but nothing did.

'analog stereo input' has always existed, responds to speech - why wouldn't the output?

Code:
    pacmd list-sinks | egrep active\|output
Quote:
name: <alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo>
analog-output-speaker: Speakers (priority 10000, latency offset 0 usec, available: no)
analog-output-headphones: Headphones (priority 9900, latency offset 0 usec, available: yes)
active port: <analog-output-headphones>

Is it an auto-sense jack that is disabled (by hw) when unplugged/no connection is detected? I know the onboard audio jacks on one of my motherboards does this, and its quite annoying (I eventually said 'enough' and put an old PCI card in).

That output shows headphones as active profile, but I guess you were using them at the time. Anyway, the speakers are showing too.

I have built-in speakers; if nothing is plugged into the jack output goes to them.

Yes, now: why not before, when I needed them?

Do the built-in speakers physically work? In other words, can we isolate this as a 'pure hardware' or 'pure software' issue? I'm just thinking if there's some bad connection inside (like a bad cable or a bad solder joint) it may be intermittent and that's why it 'sometimes works' and 'sometimes doesn't' as the software sees those built-in speakers (or some other jack) 'disconnect' or 'connect' (even when it ought not to) - I'm not saying that IS what is wrong, just a 'maybe' that should be troubleshooted.

Many things use audio. When a non-pulse thing uses audio, it blocks pulse from seeing / using those things. Plus pulse can be quirky. I've often had to disable something and enable it again for it to behave to expectations. But I'm also quirky. With my RPi 4B pulseaudio server setup. Making the configuration be a one liner config on the client machines. And all that processing being handled by another remote machine.
