Why does open office put lines into adjacent cell when I am splitting one cell

Why does open office writer Table 4.2.7.2 build 2 put lines into adjacent cell when I am splitting one cell. That's pretty much it. I split the first cell of a row and 1/2 the time one or all of the line of new cells find their way into next cell to the right.

I created a table in Office Writer 2 rows by 2 columns.

Placed different data in each cell.

Row 1 contains: abc, and 123.

Row 2 contains: def, and 456

I used the mouse within the top left most cell to get a menu.

Under Cell, there was a sub-menu allowing me to split. This caused a pop-up where I could split either Horizontally or Vertically and check off to have it be equal proportions.

I split the top-left most cell Horizontally. That happened correctly, no new data was copied or added.

I next split the top-right most cell Vertically. That happened correctly, no new data was copied or added.

Enclosed are some screenshots.
