why does my Knoppix freeze?

ok here is my problem knoppix is just resently installed on a laptop and a desktop, with the same CD. THe knoppix on the laptop runs fine, the knoppix on the desktop doesn't, it shows funny vertical lines when you highlight something on the menu and on the very top of each window, it also freezes sometimes. I kept both linux OS's running with the same programs.

Could this be a HD issue, or a CPU issue or did something odd happen that won't happen again if I reinstall Knoppix on the desktop, or should I install red hat enterprise 3 on the desktop?

I heard from many sources that installing Knoppix in the first place isn't a good idea. It's a great LiveCD distro, and I think it was only intended to be that way..

If I were you I'd try RHEL 3. Just my

It sounds to me like the desktop machine has the graphic/X software configured incorrectly. I would look at the settings for the hardware in XF86Config or xorg.conf. Make sure that the refresh rates are within your monitor's capability and that you are using the correct driver.

You can also look in the /var/log/messages and /var/log/boot.msg files as well as running dmesg in a terminal window. Look for errors and warnings about the video hardware.

thanks stress junkie, I think that is what it is.

I took the monitor from my old computer and intalled it to the new graphics card/computer(because the montitor is a lot bigger) before intalling linux. Linux worked just well when I had my old graphics card/computer hooked up to the old monitor
