Why does handbrake encodes videos faster than ffmpeg?
greetings to all linux geeks,
I know handbrake uses all cores it finds to speed up encoding videos. But when ffmpeg uses all cores with the -threads 4 option it is still not as fast as handbrake. For example I ripped a two hour dvd in ten minutes with handbrake. Whereas, it took 25 minutes with ffmpeg with the -threads 4,-vcodec libx264 and -vpre lossless_ultrafast. Ffmpeg is working fine of course, I am just curious why it isn't as fast as handbrake. |
Since I didn't get any relies I assume It is because of my username. I do not hate linux. I though it would be funny to use a username opposite of what I think about linux. Second, linux is my main OS on my PC.

i dont use either (i use mencoder which is tres slow but has very many options). i think it is like saying gedit is faster than open-office.
these release notes from a few years ago talks about codecs/containers they dropped support for for the sake of speed: http://handbrake.fr/?article=10 |
Interesting reading. Now I know a little more about handbrake.

that would depend on the ffmpeg used .
the slightly older SINGLE threaded ? or the current multi threaded ffmpeg ? |
