Why does airsnort only work whilst I'm runnning Kismet?

Airsnort (run as root or regular user) starts up... but no scanning takes place.
When I run kismet at the same time, all is well. Why? It seems airsnort cannot put the wireless card into RFMON mode on its own!

Debian 2.6.12 on Dell C400
Orinoco gold PCMCIA
Module patched with orinoco-0.15rc3
Kismet woks just fine!

Any ideas?
