why can't OO writer use all my fonts?

I want to use the Dejavu Sans Ultralight font in an OpenOffice Writer document. The KDE font installer says I have it, but it, and various other fonts, don't seem to be available in OO Writer. Why not?

Try running /usr/lib/openoffice/program/spadmin (as an ordinary user, not root, in a graphical terminal) then Fonts, Add and browse to each font directory in turn; in each: Create soft links only: tick, Select All, OK

There are no fonts listed in the "Add Fonts" window, for some reason.

You don't have to run anything: it's there, but Extra-light is a variant, like bold or italic, so it's not listed as a separate font.

Enter your text in Deja Vu Sans. Then select it and click on Format - Character. There you'll find Extra-light listed in the typeface box, with eight other variants.

If it's any consolation, it took me about a year to realise this: I too tried various tricks to reveal the "missing" font!
