Impossible to say, I just ran a test, 80 packages in 20 minutes, 250kbs,
the 'update-manager' got updated too, may be it will not work next time.
Anyway, you can always try 'sudo apt-get -u upgrade'
Others have the same problem : http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...nstall-645886/
I think that the update monitor program forgets to go into administrator mode so it tried to update the software without the proper authority to do so.
Try using the command that knudfl suggested using a terminal window. That should work.
Or you could use the Adept package manager. Run Adept. Reload the package database. Mark updates. Apply.
If those methods seem to hang without downloading the new packages then you may want to change which computers you are using for updates. Maybe the servers that your package manager is using are busy or are off line.

As a relative newbie that has gone through this situation before especially with Ubuntu and Fedora I did find disabling the ip6 settings on the network card did sometimes free up the situation.
Has it at any point been able to connect to the internet? If it has just check that the repositories have not been disabled due to not being accessible at the time of initial installation.
