why can't I connect to internet anymore

I'm using gentoo and I can acquire an ip address on eth0, but even after that, I can't connect to or ping anything on the internet and my wireless doesn't work anymore.

Everything was working fine until I tried giving a user accout certain capabilities...
Code:
chown [user] /sbin/iwconfig
chown [user] /sbin/ifconfig
chown [user] /etc/conf.d/wifi-radar.conf
I realized that this was probably a serious mistake, and I changed the ownerships back to root (at least I think that they were owned by root before I did anything...)

That's the only thing that I can think of that caused this problem.

I hope someone knows about this and can help me...

erm.. yeah that's no way at all to try to give users access to things, never change the ownership of a file, modify the actual user instead. as long as these files all report to be owned by root again then there's no real reason they shouldn't be back to normal again. can you show us an ls -l or these files? can you actually provide some real errors?

Code:
$ ls -l /sbin/ifconfig
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 60360 Sep 26 19:42 /sbin/ifconfig
$ ls -l /sbin/iwconfig
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 18608 Sep 28 06:58 /sbin/iwconfig
$ ls -l /etc/conf.d/wifi-radar.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 260 Oct  1 17:57 /etc/conf.d/wifi-radar.conf
I can't find any real errors appearing. When I open up the web-browser it just gives the usual 'unable to find server' sort of message. I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out what has caused this. I can't find anything unusual in my bash_history.

Did you make sure you have the addresses of the name servers (DNS or whatever) configured correctly? That's the first thing I check, because if the DNS Server numbers aren't given, you won't be able to do anything. Hope this helps

Also firstly try reseting your modem/router and any switches while your at it. Just power them down for a few seconds and back on.

Could be that you received an ip from your router alright, but your modem couldn't get outside to feed you anyting back from the internet.

Ahmed,
I've checked the nameservers and they are correct.

Z3nith,
I've reset the router a few times. I'm sure the router is working, because I can connect to it with dhcp (still I cannot connect wireless anymore).

I hope that someone can still help me...

**edit
ok, I totoally erased and rewrote my /etc/resolv.conf and now my ethernet connection work. My wireless still doesn't work though
