When trying to start a session in the vm i get the following message for the gateway and workstation:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Whonix-Gateway

VT-x is disabled in the BIOS for all CPU modes (VERR_VMX_MSR_ALL_VMX_DISABLED).

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Whonix-Workstation.

VT-x is disabled in the BIOS for all CPU modes (VERR_VMX_MSR_ALL_VMX_DISABLED).

i do not know what 'VT-x' is. how do i enable it?

It's a feature in the hardware of a physical machine, which with the right circumstances, can help speed up something operating in a virtual machine.

If your physical machine has it:
  1. You enable it in the BIOS setup.
  2. Exactly how you enable it can be different for different forms of BIOS's.
  3. You can search for the information on the Internet about how to enable it for your machine.
