Question Who's blocking my sound card?

I've been having recurring problems with sound on my Mepis Linux 3.3.1 box. (I run the KDE desktop.) It started when I got comfortable with Amarok and started using it heavily. One day right in the middle of nowhere artsd threw an error saying something about device not found, using /dev/null for output. Ever since then I couldn't get my sys notifications right. They won't play without setting an external player. I tried setting the KDE "Sound System" to enabled, disabled. I tried sending output from the "Sound System" to ALSA. I tried different driver settings in AMarok. I tried using XMMS instead of Amarok. Nothing I do gives me the desired sound I want. What I want is simple. I want my sys notifications to play along with my music and everything else. Behaviour the happens by default on Windows, however on Linux this has become a challenge. I had this problem before when I was running Fedora 3 and that's one of the main reasons I switched distros. Now on Mepis things were going alright for a minute until I installed Amarok so I've switched to using XMMS. Yesterday I found a temp work around involving piping the sound system through ALSA, setting a custom playarts shell script as my external player, and setting the ALSA driver in XMMS. Everything was working ok (not the best setup but it worked) and I left XMMS up but not playing anything last night. As of this morning my sounds are all gone and I can't get anything to play. I'd really like to resolve the issue. I posted for a while on Mepislovers.org but I haven't found an answer. I'm posting here because I'm viewing this as a general KDE software problem rather than a MepisSpecific problem. I'm positive that it is not hardware related as my box boots into XP and plays sound with no issue, moreover everything was working until I installed certain software. Please help.

Unhappy

As a side question, how do I find out what process is blocking my sound card. Like I said I left Xmms running last night and when I came in this morning it was gone. I couldn't find a trace of it either in the ksysguard window or when I ran "ps -ef | grep xmms". I don't think it's running anymore but I can't be sure. I know something has my sound card blocked right now but I can't figure out what it is. Is there a command I could use or some other magic?

Why are you resurrecting a 7-year old post?
