Which packages to install?

Which packages to install?

I am very impressed that a person can do all kinds of things with just a regular Linux distribution. I had no idea that you could configure a server and such with this...

Let me ask this though: I am a serious newbie and have no plans at the moment for a server and only one computer... I have a lot of hard disk space (15GB in all)... I am not a programmer, so, which packages should I install?

Install network managed workstation, internet related packages, games, multimidia, window managers, if you plan to develop anything install development environment, Mandy has good explanation on every package it has, so read it and decide for yourself, it is hard to tell right now, cause you didn't specify why you're using linux , for what purpose?

Ill explain...

I was reading about Linux in a magazine and was very impressed with how it all came about...people contributing to it over the net etc...I figured nice idea...itll never work though unfortunately...i was thinking: who'd use it? I didnt realize people by the millions were using it and even (unbeknowst to me) one of my good friends was using it. So i figured the other day Id give it a try... When I had heard that it never had to be rebooted unless you the user screwed it up then I decided to give my all with it. I am so tired and sick of Windows and its freeze ups for seemingly no reason. Ive always had the suspicion that it was never put together very well in the first place. Probably due to the fact that Microsoft is trying extremely hard to please the stockholders and puts it out too quickly.

At any rate... I think I will try your suggestions on packages. But... should I install KDE or Gnome? It gives me a choice or I can install both...which one should i try?

I guess the main reason I want to use Linux is to learn ALL I CAN!
