which linux application ist most similar to adobe Illustrator?

Hi.

I'm looking for alternatives to Adobe Illustrator.

I don't need a lot of functions.
But what I need is:

1. Drawing vector graphics for scientific presentations (Latex documents)...Xfig seems to be a good alternative for this function.
2. I need to arrange multiple jpg/bmp/png/or similar files on one A4-Paper and later save them in .eps-format (also needed for writing Latex-Documents).

Thx for any recommendations!

Editing postscript

I have looked at most of the programs that you mentioned, but none of them allow me to import postscript or tiff figures generated in other programs and edit them like you can in illustrator.

Does anyone know of a good procedure, even if it involves converting the postscript first, that will allow me to edit postscript figures?

Thanks

Try Scribus <http://www.scribus.net>
It can import EPS/PS and SGV files as well.

I had an older version of scribus that didn't have eps import, but the newer version has it and it works great. Unfortunately, the program always crashes for me if I am not running as root, but other than that it works fine.

Thanks
