Hi all at LQ.

Which is your favorite email client?

Please comment on why.

linustalman 01-31-2016 04:41 AM

I like Thunderbird the most but see Sylpheed as a close seconds.

Mutt seems to be great. Might take a while to have it at your hand but seems to worth it.

I haven't got it yet fully customize, but with side bar patch and slang compile option (for colors), it is great.

Hi Tonus.

Thanks for the info.

Please select 'Other' in the Poll options. :)

Thunderbird is just as widely used as outlook. Easy to install from mozilla and has a good internal updater if you get the proprietary package (I always do. Software is about practicality not politics. If you want me to go GNU, make packages that work as good as the proprietary stuff.)

With the calendar extension, it handles everything I need in a datebook. It's easy to access from my phone. I can download anything in raw format if i want to script something.

It's a little bloated, but the whole point of running a minimalist desktop (for me, at least) is to have available speed, storage, and headroom for any chubby stuff I feel like running.

I started on Thunderbird, because that's what I was given. Then I migrated to Evolution, as less confusing. Finally, I found Claws when reviewing a distro and promptly installed it on my working system.

I remember the question of email clients once came up, off-topic, in a linguistics mailing list and Amanda said she'd never used one: she wrote her emails in vi and sent and received via the command line. Now that's what I call old-school!

Hi all...

For me, Thunderbird is more full featured, allows me to see emails exactly how they are written (i.e., html content) and being to install add-ons is another nice bonus. :)

However, I've not tried Claws, so I don't know if it is comparable with Thunderbird.

Regards...

Mutt.

Sypheed/Claws is my second choice. They are so closely related I think of them as one thing.

Hi.

I have always just used a net browser. Not quite "other?" Just switched my primary to https://protonmail.com/ ... :)

(I like the anti-monopoly laws too! :D)

On the web version supports "End-to-End Encryption," with two passwords one to open the tunnel and another to unlock the mail. Maybe a "email client" could do this but why have two apps?

i use pine with gmail - actually re-alpine (ALPINE 2.20) which works great. i prefer pine for its simplicity, ease and speed, and because it's GUI free. moreover, pine works just fine in a terminal - even on my venerable Nokia N900 !

I voted other, because I would like to use a working Kmail2 (Plasma), which I like much better than TB. But it is still buggy in the moment.

Seamonkey.
There are lots of Firefox and Thunderbird extensions I wouldn't want to give up, and they run in Seamonkey (a few I need to modify so that they do).
I almost always have a browser open and I really don't want to run two big programs if I can get away with just one*.
Firefox and Thunderbird always seem to be changing their ui, so it is easier to keep it how I like it in Seamonkey.

*You might ask why not use the Gmail web interface or similar, but I find them quite annoying.
