In 2009/ 2010 Fedora was my best distribution, I had different Huawei modems without any problem.
I had nothing to do (no installation), only 1 click of a mouse to connect.
Nowadays you need a couple of steps (including country, provider, PIN,...).
But the first thing to do is:
open a Terminal / Konsole:
"l" like list to see if it is recognized.
You should see something like

Bus 001 Device 006: ID 12D1:1003 Huawei...E220 HSDPA/HSUPA Modem
...
The 8 digits of the hexadecimal number 12D1 1003 are representing the company and the model.
Sorry that I can' t give you further help, because I no longer use USB modems.
