Which Format to Create Looped Animations (like GIF, but with more than 8bit colors)?

There it is in the title.
The information to loop endlessly should be included inside the file.
The animation will be created from a series of existing photos (but other use cases are of course possible)

My research so far:

APNG - would be perfect, but browser and software support is very poor.

SVG - seems to be able to do it, but I haven't been able to find comprehensive documentation. Esp. if it's possible from photos.

...?

ImageMagick should be able to do it.

thank you for taking an interested.

the page you linked seems to only ever use the GIF format.
if i missed something, please point me to it.

the gif format does not allow more than 256 colors (= 8bit).
that's the reason i started this thread, i wonder if there's a format that can do more, but at the same time have the information "endless loop" encoded into it.
