I'm looking for a lightweight alternative to Microsoft Sharepoint, that I can host locally. There are loads out there, but can anyone recommend a few from experience to narrow it down for me?

Many thanks,

It might help if you told us what Sharepoint is/does and which aspect(s) of it you want to use. I looked at this site and couldn't get my head around it at all. It sounded vaguely like something that Google might do.
ciao,

I thought sharepoint used "the cloud"?
Ok, do you want to share documents in real time (several parties adding and deleting things simultaneously). You used to be able to share a whiteboard with Inkscape but I don't think they support it any more. Coccinella also allows a shareable whiteboard. It really depends on what capabilities you want people to have. I'm still groping to understand exactly what you're looking for. You could also host a website, etc. etc. (S)FTP server .....

Sorry if I'm not making myself clear. All I want is document storage and retrieval (inc. search capabilities), and the ability to assign various permissions to various users of the DMS.
I'm looking at something like that as well. Till now I've found Drupal and Joomla.
Drupal seems complicated with all the modules (too much choice?) and I haven't looked too much into Joomla yet. Not sure about search facilities in either but that's not really important for me.

No problem. It's getting clearer. Wouldn't setting up an FTP server do all that. You can set permissions (e.g. create a group of those who can have access to read, modify or execute) and everything lives on your host machine. What am I missing here. It seems like the obvious solution.

KnowledgeTree has "document storage and retrieval (inc. search capabilities), and the ability to assign various permissions to various users of the DMS" but it's not exactly lightweight. The FOSS Community Edition has become a poor relation of the commercial editions over the last few years.
