which device for which hardware

System is Red Hat Linux 9, kernel 2.4.20-8.

The PC has an onboard AC'97 codec and an outboard USB audio device. Given that I will have two /dev/dsp* entries, how do I figure out which hardware device each is referring to?

As I understand it, the "first" device will end up being minor number 3; the "second" device ending up with minor number 19. That's all fine and good, except how do I know whether the USB audio device was the "first" or the onboard card was the "first"?

I'm making an assumpting there is some ioctl() which will return information I can use, but I'm not sure what that might be. (Maybe even figuring out which driver is controlling a specific device...I can certainly figure it out from there.)

Anyway, that's my situation. Any advice?

Thanks!

Hi.

Check the output from 'dmesg' or /var/log/messages.

The kernel lists which cards have been assigned to which devices as it boots (or as the devices are added).
