Which browser is best?

Hey folks,

I'm switching to linux completely but I not yet know which browser to use. I tried multiple but they all suck compared to IE (sorry for that). None of the browsers i tried displays the pages like they should.

Please help me get a real browser for linux.

CathodioN.

try opera

dorward 05-14-2002 09:07 AM

Mozilla (currently on 1.0-RC2) probably does the best job at interpreting webpages (and displays a lot more sites correctly then IE). Konqueror also has very good support.

fatgod 05-14-2002 09:33 AM

I use Konquror mostly, but I fall back on netscape6 from time to time...

If a page does not display in either of these browsers I email the site I'm trying to view complaining of their narrow minded view that the world only has IE users and say somthing about this impacting on sales starting with mine :D

If a web page does not display on a given browser then it is not following internet standards. simple as that.

fatgod 05-14-2002 09:35 AM

I should have mentioned that I'm using Konquror 3. It hase some nice features that have been pinched from IE. (or maybe MS pinched them from somewhere else first) I don't know, but it is good all the same ;)

Cathodion, use Opera. Also, have mozilla installed too, you may find that you want to use more than one browser(!!! say it ain't so! you mean linux users get a *choice*!!!???!?!?!?)

You will probably already have Galeon and Konqueror installed on your system, they are file managers that also work as browsers, like Explorer.exe does.

You will still find that some sites do not display properly in any browser other than internet exploder. This is not a problem with any other browser, this is M$ little marketing ploy to make you think that IE is the best browser. here's how it works:

HTML is a standard, developed so that all pages can be viewed on all browsers. The first thing M$ did when they heard about this was to change all the htmls tags, then bring out a browser that supported their nonstandard vision of what html should be. The reason for this was that they then released wysiwyg html editors that outputted in this broken proprietary html format.
M$ html became very popular because they distributed this broken browser with their very operating system, so that the circle of broken M$ html was complete. if any one point in the chain contained M$ html, then only M$ software could view it properly.
To add insult to injury, IE was based on netscape in the first place. Many webpages still display wrong in any nonM$ browser, due to M$' frontpage package deliberately creating broken html, and also due to many html writers being blind or indifferent to the standards they are supposed to be adhering to. The End.

there is no BEST browser.

personally i hate opera, i use galeon and links. that's galeon which incidentally is NOT a file browser as well, callllum. that's nautilus.

don't take anyone's word for anything, give everything a go and decide for yourself. if you follow mass opinon why are you using linux? ;-)

Calum 05-14-2002 10:46 AM

yeah well whatever, just passing on info that i have heard, myself i like using opera and lynx, so why would i bother using anything else?
My slight slip i think is further proof that people should try stuff out for themselves rather than going with the herd as you say.

I suppose you deliberately spelt Calum with more than one 'L', well how mature, you failed to piss me off if that was your intention.

Maybe i am not enough of a pedant for this website...

Hey, cool it guys.

Calum, I think that possibly Chris was taking the piss, but then, you do specifically and intentionally point out that your name is spelled with 1L in your sig - you should expect some leg-pulling from time to time. And pendantry is not a requirement of the site, but if you give some info that is even slightly wrong, you should expect to be pulled up on it at some point - I should know, it's happened to me often enough, and I'm still here! Don't let it get to you.

Cathodion, if you've got the space, then try installing many different ones and use them all (even at the same time). Although web-pages are supposed to be standard, they will look different in some browsers - just see which one you prefer. Oh, and if you're gonna be viewing some Japanese/Chinese sites, expect some problems with things not being displayed correctly. It seems as though most of these have been written with some poor MS software that IE reads fine, but due to some errors (that IE doesn't really care about), might not display properly under other browsers.

Hope this helps.

It duplicated something that was already said, I saw no need to keep such a wasteful post in there.... like this one.

Try running IE under WINE. :p

cathodion 05-15-2002 02:09 AM

Mozilla as usual browser
I'm using mozilla 1.2.1 standard included with RH9.0.
Very nice thanks to its smoothed fonts (thanks xft)

Opera for more critical missions
When it comes to websites fully respecting W3C that Mozilla sometimes can't display correctly, this is the right choice. Appealing themes as well.

Konqueror for flexible ID
When wanting to go on my bank website (you know, for web banking) Konqueror tries to play its role not badly as it offers the possibility to make him being identified as an Explorer 5.5 on Win2000 for instance.
VERY useful when web banking with a website only developped for M$ stuff.

Though, since some weeks none of them is granting me access to my web banking anymore ... even when identified as Explorer 5.5 on Win2000 or Explorer 6.0 on WinXP and so on.

I assume thanks to the Javascript debugger console that there lies the problem. There's somewhere a Javascript error that blocks me to execute some banking orders.

That's my personal experience on this.

Have fun.
