Where to put Installed Software

Hi all,

This may be a silly question, but when I install software where should I put it?

I'm running Mandrake 10 community and have installed ltmodem drivers, NVidia drivers, Firefox, Thunderbird, but don't know where they should be put (in the past I've mainly used rpms). I'm about to go on a downloading binge, downloading educational games etc for my daughter and would like to know where I should put them to keep a tidy system.

Is /usr/local the right spot, and if so which directory.

Thanks

I think there's a degree of choice involoved, but it's advisable to stay within the 'standard' filesystem layout. Personally, if I'm installing libraries I put them in /usr (so they go in /usr/lib) but if I'm installing a game or other piece of software I put it in /usr/local so the binary goes in /usr/local/bin

That's just the pattern I follow, I know some people put their software in /opt

Thanks Komakino,

Thats kinda what I figured but wanted to check. My Mandrake 9.1 got kind of messy as I experimented while learning etc, so I want to start of on the right foot with 10.
