Where to install software?

This is a question that I've had for some time now. It seems like every different app (that I can't find with urpmi) suggests a different place to install. I am the only user of this machine. Where would YOU install your apps? What about if this was a shared machine? Where would I install them then?

Doesn't matter, unless there is a really good reason to force the source code to install to a particular directory, I let it install where it wants to.

That's sort of what I figured....But I was also thinking along the lines that if they were all installed in the same place, it would make things a whole helluva lot easier ya know :-)

Usually programs bundled into rpm files gets installed (copied) into /usr. Some programs may be installed in /opt. Programs that are compiled except for src.rpm files gets installed in /usr/local. Additional libraries that the program needs gets installed into either /lib or /usr/local/lib. Really it is up to the distributor or programmer that makes the package can choose where the program will be installed.

It could not hurt to do a search by using locate if the database is updated or use the find utility.
