You could try to temporarely disable SELinux and see if the problem still exists to completely put asside a possible selinux problem. If it is not that, I have no idea...

I know this is a bit off topic - but have you tried any of the free PDF readers, such as evince and KPDF (both of which come with Fedora Core 5). I use KPDF on a regular basis, and find that it meets all of my needs, sometimes better than Acroread does.
Again, not really answering your question, but I am not at all impressed with acroread 7.0.5. On this machine (2.4GHz P4) it takes about 20 seconds to open a document, while xpdf opens the same thing in a couple of seconds.
