Where to configure ICC profiles with Gutenprint/CUPS?
 

Ok, this is my first question, than. :)

I installed color management everywhere else from Gimp to Xsane and I collected all profiles I need.

But I don't find WTH I configure color profiles in CUPS or/and in Gutenprint directly. I grep'd throught the config files in /etc/, I checked all menus, I looked into the printing dialogs of several applications. As far as I understand it, those application will send already converted color data to the configured printer, but what about printing from command line where only Ghostscript and the PPD stuff should be involved?

I checked and found several mailing lists entries which mention color management in CUPS and Gutenprint. So I assume this working until you tell me otherwise.

I have started doing some Googling. I found several links, but have not had time to pursue further.
One promising link mentioned ICC profiles going into CUPS 1.3 (I'm on 1.2.4)

My latest theory would be that CUPS has color profile support, but maybe just for already embedded color profiles.

I'm curious what you will dig up.

"Starting with the print file, applications can embed ICC and other types of color profiles to alter the printed output." is what made me thinking that maybe CUPS just works with already embedded profiles.

By "application", perhaps they mean the printer driver. If I remember correctly, I installed ICC profiles in Photoshop---meaning, I assume, that they were used by Photoshop's printing front-end.

That's how I did it under Linux; in every application I checked, one can configure a printing profile (gimp, scribus etc.). But: I assume those applications convert rgb -> cmyk first and than match cmyk for the specific paper and then send already color proofed and converted data to the printer.

On the other hand: Assume I'll send you a file to print and I'll embed a color profile into it - what does CUPS do if you just print it from command line?

Third: What if the file to print does not have a profile embedded? Shouldn't I be able to configure the printer (maybe it's a Ghostscript question?!) with its own profile? (I've got an Epson Stylus Photo 1290 and there are profiles for this printer - for several kinds of photo papers for example.)

Maybe I'm just imagining things wrong, because I'm not used to work with color profiles - it's rather new to Linux and I never used Windows or Mac.

There is a CLI tool called tifficc (part of "Little CMS") which embeds an icc profile in a TIFF file.

Apparently, Imagemagick has similar functionality

Scribus documentation has stuff on using icc profiles.

Yes, I got this already up and running in Krita, Xsane, Scribus and Gimp for several month now. :)

Add the "separate+" plugin to your list and install Gimp pre 2.4 and you'll have the long awaited color management and soft proof in Gimp.

Inside these applications everything (for my taste and needs) is fine (looks fine when it comes out of my printer.. :) ).
