Where should I install?

I want to install OSSP mm Shared Memory Allocation, I've downloaded the tar.gz and unzipped it.

The INSTALL file says:

To install the MM library into /path/to/mm/{bin,lib,include,man}/ perform
the following steps in your shell:

$ ./configure --prefix=/path/to/mm
$ make
$ make test
$ make install

This installs at least a static variant of the MM library and when your
platforms support it, also a shared library variant of the MM library.

Where should I install to please?

Thank you!

You may get differing opinions on this, but I install anything I compile myself to /usr/local. That way things that are outside the knowledge of your package management system (rpm in the case of Redhat) are all in one place, i.e. somewhere under /usr/local.

I would use:

$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local

If the configure script was generated by autoconf, /usr/local will be the default prefix.

If that is the only documentation I wouldn't install it at all.

I'd look around and do a search to see what the others who have used it have done. It's not system core, so it belongs in /usr/local--but it all is determined by how well the makefiles were written.

There should be considerably more docs than what you have discussed.
