where is the path in linux?

I am trying to install KDE 3.1 and it tells me that i need to put kde in my path?
i know how to do that in dos path=whatever but how in linux?
i am running slack 8.1

export path=$PATH:/path/to/whatever

for a permanent solution add "PATH=$PATH:/path/to/kde/bin"
to "$HOME/.profile" (kind of autoexec.bat for a user :-) or
to "/etc/profile" (for all users)
