where do things install to?

hello, im new at linux still and i dont know where everything is installed to. Im using suse9.2 i believe. I installed xchat and it created a shortcut in the "start" menu. However, when i choose a different account, its not there. I tried creating it, but i dont know where is the icon? I really hate having no icons for my shortcuts. Also, how do i temporarily be root inside KONSOLE? I hate having to switch to root account every time i install something. Also, when i try to ./configure something, it says that X is missing. What does that mean? I hope someone can help me with this. Thx.

sudo before a command will give you temporary root access... like sudo ./configure, also you should be able to just drag the files from the application menu to the desktop to link to them! gl

I'm not sure about the X includes, but "cd .." (without quotes) works in Konsole. The space is important.
