Where can I install a program so that all users can access it?

I want to install Firefox, but I need to put it somewhere where all users will have access to it, not in my home folder.

Some distro's install firefox in /usr/bin ..
/usr/local is a bit more narrow for it.

Other option is to creat a directory /opt and put all optional software there .. including java and stuff.
you can modify the /etc/profile and change the path to include these installs for all users.

I wouldn't want to put it in /usr/local .. another reason is that I could potentially put /opt in a separate fs and mount that across different distros .. thatway I don't have to download/install it all the times when I change distros !!!

either will work !!

For Firefox, just grab the package for it in -current and use that (it's the official Firefox binaries repackaged for Slackware by Pat)

/usr/lib/firefox is where most distro's put it. For my system I just made 2 directories in /usr/local, apps and games. I put my games in games and apps in apps. Simple and I know where everything is. Then just sym link to the programs from /usr/local/bin
