Unless you're using a really old version of Ubuntu, you need to use the Software Center to add or remove programmes.

If you really want only free software, using one of the distros the FSF endorses or maybe debian without 'non-free' repos is the way to go IMO.

Synaptic, aptitute, apt-get all work even with the newest versions of ubuntu. You dont 'need' to use Software Centre.

BTW, that 'UbuntuSoftwareCenter' link is misleading IMO. It says "Software restricted by copyright or legal issues (Multiverse)". TThere is plenty of software in the 'Multiverse' repos that is NOT 'restricted by copyright or legal issues' have been moved to multiverse (e.g. Xfce, Lxde) just so that canonical can play silly games with support.

Rather a vague question. You can get "non-proprietary" software lots of places. All Linux distributions provide access to such software, as do teh BSD's. There is tons of non-proprietary software for other OSes as well. Just search about for what you want.

@cascade9: I was guessing that the actual question being asked was "How do I install new things?" based on the second sentence of eir post, combined with a vague idea of Linux's free-libre software attitudes. I may have misinterpreted what was being asked entirely, however.

And the Software Center is merely the most newbie-friendly system, in my opinion.
