I got it... thanks!!! Is there anything to gain from compiling from source vs downloading the binary?

Does RH 9 come with nano? You could use that instead. It's pretty much the same thing, no?

No problems mate. You are welcome . About your question, I'd say that it really depends of the application. On the top of my head, the only application that I've compiled and gave me a better performance then the binary, was mplayer. I've had a lot of movie-sync problems on my RH9.0 days. But that was about it

Nano is basically Pico with an overhaul and features and bugs fixed.

http://www.ewtoo.org/~astyanax/nano/dist/v1.3/

Get the nano-1.3.4.tar.gz file, it is source, you'll have to compile it.

If it doesn't install or configure due to errors, I'd go up a parent directory on the page, install oldest version of nano, skip a couple of versions (dont install every single one!) until you get to the highest version without errors.

Thats what I had to do for one of my boxes.

Also the pre-compiled vs binary war:
This is from what I am lead to believe/know
It really doesn't make too much of a difference unless you see it in a chipset programmer's eyes. The reason the person above was having choppy issues in his media player is because it wasn't optimized completley for his system.

The so-called precompiled binary could have been compiled for a 2.4 ghz system with twice as fast of an FSB as his computer as well (assuming he's on like a 1.2ghz system) and so the program binary expects faster clock cycles.

Again, it doesn't make much of a difference if you compiled a program that does "Hello world!" in the shell on a 9ghz machine or not, because, after all, it's not a very intensive program.

However, when you get to games and media applications which use a lot of CPU I believe it may have a performance boost if you compile such.

yup, it was optmized. I'm running a P4 - 2GHZ with 256MB. It really depends of the application...

Agreed with above posters. My reason for renouncing Mandrake and Debian for Gentoo is the stability. Since running my machine with mostly source-based applications, it hasn't crashed or locked up at all (and the Gentoo admin tools are as useful as Deb and Mandy's). The apps are compiled for my machine only, without many optimizations for every other box out there. It takes forever to install or upgrade some apps, though.

As said before, if it doesn't work as a binary, try compiling it from source.
