When you specify an smtp/pop3 server in outlook, is it looked up via MX instead of A?

Ok something really weird. First time I'm setting up a DNS for mail server, so I do the following:

A Records: -> IP
* -> IP -> IP

MX Record: ->

I can send and recieve mail just fine if I specify as my pop3/smtp, but if I specify it says no response from server (even though I can ping just fine). What is this BS? Or perhaps I'm supposed to specify in a list of my mail server's local hosts?

I had a simular problem... it sounds like your dns is fine...
You might want to check out our host file... to make sure your entries are correct...
then double check your access and local-host-names entries...
