When playing an AVI with Kaffeine, the sound plays, but no video.

I'm having an intermittent problem with Kaffeine 0.8.7 on openSUSE 11.0 (KDE3). Most of the time when playing an AVI file, there is no video, but the sound still plays. Once in a while, the video will play.

I know that the file is not corrupted because I can play it with MPlayer.

I've tried re-installing the kaffeine and other codec packages, but with no success. I have Compiz-Fusion running. However, that's not the problem. I temporarily switched to KDE4 (which is running without compiz), but Kaffeine still doesn't play the video (sound still plays).

Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Possibly Kaffeine hasn't been compiled to use the proprietary codecs. If this is the case you'll have to download the source code and compile it yourself.

It played all the formats fine until about a week ago. I've been using Linux (and Kaffeine) for over a year, and this is the first time I've had any problems with Kaffeine.
