When is nfslock necessary?

Hi.

My CentOS 4.4 starts up nfslock automatically at startup. I am wondering if this is a necessary service? This machine itself does not export any NFS volumes, though it does mount NFS volumes shared by other UNIX computers.

Can I safely stop nfslock in this situation?

Thanks!
Dai
