src.rpm is a source code file in rpm format and it must be compiled.

The rpm book: Maximum RPM

From man rpm:
Quote:
BUILDING PACKAGES:
rpm {-ba|-bb|-bp|-bc|-bi|-bl|-bs} [build-options] SPECFILE ...

rpm {-ta|-tb|-tp|-tc|-ti|-tl|-ts} [build-options] TARBALL ...

rpm {--rebuild|--recompile} SOURCEPKG ...
